The Impact of Hazard Classification Changes & Evolving Challenges
Changes in technology impacting automobiles, construction techniques and storage systems have had a significant impact on the fire challenges in parking structures. NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems has responded to these changes by revising the hazard classifications for parking structures. Protection guidance is also found in FMDS 7-15 Garages and FMDS 3-26 Fire Protection for Non-storage Occupancies.
This presentation will explore the guidance in these documents and the impact of recent changes on sprinkler design. It will also provide an opportunity to discuss evolving fire protection challenges relating to alternative fuel vehicles, updating sprinkler systems, and the need for retroactive installation of sprinklers.
At the end of this webinar the participant will be able to:
- Discuss the history and current state of fire protection in parking structures.
- Describe the fire protection challenges presented by new automobile and parking technologies.
- Discuss potential sprinkler system solutions to these challenges
